Let's start with Google, the five thousand pound gorilla in the room of the internet.
Google reviews are arguably the most important reviews to your business. I believe this for a few reasons. Firstly Google is the most utilized search engine by a long shot, they receive about 65 - 75% of all internet searches. So most people, when they search for your business are going to see your Google Reviews. Add to that, the fact that Google takes your reviews into consideration to some degree in your website's search ranking or SERP, (Search Engine Results Page). And you begin to see that Google Reviews are something you really need to monitor and strive not merely for a 5 star rating, but for as many reviews as you can attract in a constant flow.
The constant flow is almost as vital as the actual star rating. We've discussed elsewhere the research that shows that most people view reviews over a couple months old as irrelevant. So you need to ensure you have a constant stream of positive reviews. And additionally, just imagine if your widget store has 1,672 reviews and all the other widget stores in the area have 8, 10...125. Pretty easy to guess what the impression of widget searchers are going to be.
Google also made some changes recently that shows that they are paying attention to, or putting weight in reviews. If you noticed Google started showing reviews in the search results. So they are also quite a lot more visible. Now also, you can see other reviews sites ratings in the Google Business listings. So although Google as i said is arguably the most important, even Google puts some weight in other review sites, even the smaller niche review sites.
