Yelp is a very important review site. Some would call it a niche review site for restaurants, which is likely what most people use it for. You seem to hear it referenced in relation to restaurants more than anything else, but Yelp does rate virtually every type of business. Although their menu seems to present Restaurants, Nightlife and Home Services, they rate most businesses.
Yelp is important not only due to it's popularity, (it's among the top 200 most visited sites on the internet), but also because unlike sites like Facebook and Google, the only reason someone goes to Yelp is to see what people think about a particular business or group of businesses for comparison. Some could, for example make the argument that someone Googling your business may not notice your reviews. But someone on sites like Yelp are there for the expressed purpose of seeing what others think. That is really powerful and should be treated with a great deal of respect.
If your business is using a review generation app such as GooViewZ, Yelp is a review site you should definitely cultivate. I wouldn't send it to everyone, because not everyone is going to have a Yelp log in. But is you get in the habit of asking, then sending it to those that do already have an account is highly recommended. Expecting people to open accounts just to give you a review, although not impossible, it will definitely decrease your review penetration. Always when dealing with the "average client", try to offer the path of least resistance. If you see they have a Gmail email address send them to Google for a review, if they tell you they have a Yelp account then send them to Yelp. The only one I simply assume everyone has is Facebook. Now those clients, and they are plentiful, that you just really hit it off with and really enjoyed their experience, don't be afraid to ask for review after review! These are the people that will happily open a Yelp account just to give you a 5 star review! These are the people that will help you get over a 100% review penetration. These are the people that allow you to realistically aim for 125% - 150% . These are the clients that get you to be a 5 star business
