BBB, The Better Business Bureau
We are all familiar with the BBB, they have been around since 1912, so they have had over 100 years to establish themselves in the public's minds. This isn't always such a great thing however.
Some would say that the BBB was the very first reviews company. But most business owners would likely disagree if you look at how reviews are compiled and scores are established with most review sites and how BBB scores businesses.
Where modern business review sites are predominately a pure democracy of public input, (with the occasional perceived need to police reviews that get derailed by political activism), the BBB has always seemed a bit stilted toward those businesses that pay them an annual membership fee. They claim to not endorse or recommend any business, but for close to 100 years they were the "go to" source for people to get an idea of the trustworthiness of businesses.
Unfortunately the public as a whole was likely unaware that the definition of an "Accredited Business" basically meant that a business had paid the BBB an annual fee. Now granted while in the process of paying this fee you checked the box that you would adhere to good business practices and handle any complaints. But rather than the democracy of public input that exists with review sites today, the BBB was the sole arbitrator of any complaints. Although the public likely has always believed them to be an impartial source, their own Google Review standing as of this writing of 2.2 Stars.
All of this having been said they are important to your business because although they are rapidly losing influence they do still have some. GooViewZ has them included in our app to generate reviews for businesses, but you should likely put your focus on Google, Facebook, Yelp and others before putting a great deal of effort into BBB
